Why People Visit:
Memphis, Tennessee was named after ancient Egypt’s capital city by John Overton, Andrew Jackson, and James Winchester when they founded it on May 22, 1819. The ancient Memphis sat along the banks of the Nile River, but America’s somewhat more modern version enjoys its place beside the Mississippi River. As can be expected, iconic music legends the likes of Elvis, Otis Redding, and B.B. King probably draw music enthusiasts and tourists of all ages and types from around the globe. Music is synonymous with Memphis, with festivals, concerts, entertainment districts and of course Graceland, but there is more to the city than the music.
The lion roar famously announcing any MGM movie was recorded at the Memphis Zoo, which is well worth a visit. Here, over 76 acres of the ground is home to thousands of animals across 500 species. Eat, shop, thrive, or just visit the numerous attractions Memphis has to offer. Be sure to check out the million square feet of warehouse which has become the vertical urban village that is Crosstown Concourse. Here art, shops, restaurants, and music will cater to any and every taste and whim. Memphis has open spaces, an invigorating night scene, sights, sounds and an interesting history - enough to interest every visitor.
Getting There and Getting Around
Memphis International Airport is serviced by more than a few national and international carriers, servicing some 140000 passengers every month. Car Rental companies are available to rent a vehicle at the airport or from depots within the city, but you don’t need a car to see the city. Zipcars can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at locations across Downtown Memphis. Uber and Lyft cater to tourists who have the apps on their smartphones, but the original taxi cabs are also available to hire.
In Memphis, these shoes are made for walking, and visitors can feel free seeing the city on foot, using the free Map & Tourist Guide available wherever tourists visit. Named America's Most Improved Bicycle City, Memphis has many trails, routes and bike lanes for those interested in taking advantage of the many bike rental options. Explore Bike Share has 60 stations around Midtown and Downtown, all you need is the app. Also in town, Midtown Bike rents bikes by the day, while Greenline Rentals services the area outside of Downtown. As for public transport, the MATA citywide bus system offers 33 routes and thousands of bus-stops all around the city.
The Memphis Hop tour stops at ten Memphis attractions every hour, while the free Sun Studio Shuttle visits Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Graceland and Sun Studio on a first-come-first-served basis. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can Ride the Roo nightlife shuttle bus to shops, restaurants, theatres, and pubs
The 1950s-era music bus, Backbeat Tour introduces tourists to Memphis’s splendid musical heritage in a hands-on manner.
What to Wear (The Weather)
Memphis weather is generally a pretty warm environment. The summers are in the high 80's and low 90's so wear some short sleeves and prepare for some warm summer days. In the winter the temperature drops to approximately 40°F so heavy winter gear is not necessary but it is recommended to bring long sleeve clothes instead. Memphis is also typically a rainy location so bring a rain jacket and some boots!
